July 4, 2006 15:07 - Easy tip to alleviate hay fever.

If you suffer from hay fever you could try putting a drop or two of pure sesame oil up each nostril before venturing out. Pure cold pressed oil is best, do not even consider the toasted variety!

This may sound odd, but it's a tip I got from an ayurvedic doctor. I find it really works. It helps stop those irritants in their tracks.

In fact at the moment my partner is mowing the lawn, and is using this 'sesame oil trick'. He said that if he doesn't do it his eyes would start streaming after a short time...

I find the easist way to do it is rub a little of the oil into each nostril and then sniff.

July 6, 2006 11:19 - What Doctor's Don't Tell You!

On the back cover of my copy of Lynne Mc Taggart's What Doctor's Don't Tell You it says that:

"Every year, 1.17 million British people – a population the size of Birmingham - are put in a hospital bed by a medical procedure gone wrong. The shocking truth is that 80 per cent of many treatments we take for granted have never been scientifically proven to work..."

This is not, in my opinion, a negative book. There are plenty of positive alternatives given amongst all the health scares! I feel this book is inspirational towards taking care and responsibility for our own health in a positive way.

July 11, 2006 13:20 - Healthier and more slimming cake!

Do you love cake but avoid it because of the high levels of fat/oil and sugar it contains? Many ready made 'slimming' cakes have lower amounts of fat, but higher amounts of sugar than usual. Personally I think some of them taste disgusting!

My solution is to make my own. I use any recipe, but just use half the amount of fat and sugar. I also usually substitute half the white flour for wholemeal. With some recipes I've quartered the amounts of sugar and fat/oiland find the cake is still yummy [even with me making it!]

Usually I have to add a little more liquid than the recipe states, to compensate for the lesser amount of fat.

Obviously this can apply to scones, muffins etc...whatever you like!

July 18, 2006 10:39 - Are you really hungry?

Are you really hungry between meals or do you just 'fancy a nibble'?

A good test is to take a few sips of hot water. If you still feel hungry after that, then you probably aren't hungry...

but that's possibly because you've probably aleady eaten that chocolate bar...

No really, it wasn't chocolate, it was some nice healthy fruit!

Of course, fruit is the ideal between meal snack. But also, of course, we don't always do what is ideal. That's OK as long as we go for the healthier option most of the time.

Now where did I put that bar of chocolate? Ooops I've just eaten it, and the apple is still in the bowl!

July 20, 2006 14:12 - Natural midge and mosquito repellent

It's finally summer in Scotland! It's lovely, apart from those 'wee pesties', alias midges...

A good repellent for them is neem oil. I use one part neem oil to 50 parts coconut oil. An added benefit is that the coconut oil is lovely and cooling...

Apparently it also works for their nasty little cousins, mosquitoes!

Don't forget to apply around your hairline, where they really seem to enjoy a good feast!

July 25, 2006 10:55 - To 'gym' or not to 'gym'?

Is your gym membership up for renewal? If you love the gym and truly get value from the fee then go ahead and renew. But have you got doubts?

I can remember being a member of various gyms because I felt I 'should' be. I knew people who thought that exercise only 'counted' if it was in the confines of a gymnasium. When I think about it now it's wasn't logical...

I would drive to and from the gym. When I lived in London just finding a place to park could take longer than my workout!

Anyway, the point I'm making is that if I'd walked to and from the gym I'd have got plenty of exercise, especially combining it with my home yoga routine.

Now what was the point of walking to the gym, if wasn't a member you might ask...

Well to meet friends for a drink and maybe a yummy snack after their workout. And then I'd have had the bonus of walking home and working it off!

August 3, 2006 11:54 - Easy Tip For Easier and Happier Living!

The more we focus on our blessings the more of them we receive...

I know this can sound 'corny' but this simple method has shown its power over and over through the ages.

Focus on what you have rather than what you don't. Focus on what is right in your life rather than what is wrong.

To get you started you could start writing all your blessings down. I believe this is very positive to do just before sleep. It sends you off to the 'Land of Nod' in a positive frame of mind.

I think meditation creates a happier frame of mind effortlessly. If you don't already meditate here's an easy meditation technique to try.
