FOUNDATION:

Put on your favourite moisturiser first. Of course, you're using one with a good sun protection factor (SPF). Use a light textured foundation or tinted moisturiser.

Choose one that is described as 'illuminating' ,or 'light reflective' or similar. Or you can make your own tinted moisturiser by mixing your favourite moisturiser and foundation.

You'll easily find the ratio that works for you! Two parts moisturiser to one part foundation is a good starting place.

This works very well as an antiaging makeup.

Match the shade closely to your natural skintone. Personally I believe trying it on the hand or wrist is useless. The best place is on the face itself near your jawline.

Dot product on nose, forehead and chin, and blend outwards.

POWDER:

Unless your face is particularly shiny or you prefer a matte look I think this is best confined to the nose. Or at most the t-zone. Regardless of price, over-powdering is not a good antiaging makeup tactic...

It seems to emphasize every little line. So only dust a tiny amount over fine lined areas. Again match it fairly closely to your skintone.

BLUSHER:

The right shade of blusher can subtract years from our appearance. For antiaging makeup I think the best shades are pinks and corals. Or a pinky coral. You'll know when you find the right shade, your face will just 'light up'.

[Don't think you automatically have to spend a fortune for makeup to be good. I worked for a few of the more expensive make up houses and I think wonderful products can be found amongst both high and low cost products.]

Smile at yourself in the mirror. You can't miss the apples of the cheeks. Dot the blusher in the centre, a little higher than lower, and blend out and up.

If you're using powder apply in circular movements. Start with a minimal amount and add gradually. You don't want to look as if you've just escaped from the circus!

Apply a minimal amount of blush around temples. Make sure it is well blended, almost undetectable.

Experiment with cream or powder blush to see which you prefer. A cream blush with powder blush applied over the top is long lasting.

I think blush is the most important item in an antiaging makeup bag.

MASCARA:

This really is completely different for everyone. There are three main types of mascara: Natural, lengthening and volumising. I think the latter is more flattering. However, you may prefer a more natural look.

For antiaging makeup purposes, black can look harsh. Brown/black or brown is softer looking. Navy is also a more subtle option to black.

Applying mascara to just the top lashes is a good antiaging makeup tactic. It seems to lift the entire face. Mascara on the bottom lashes, particularly when it is heavily applied, can really drag the face down and emphasise any under-eye circles.

If you have never tried applying mascara to the top lashes only give it a go. You may be pleasantly surprised. Or try applying your mascara more abundantly to the top lashes, and minimally to the bottom lashes.

EYELINER:

A flattering look is a grey or brown pencil or powder applied very close to the top lashes, then gently smudged. If you like a line under the bottom lashes, try a lighter shade, and try just lining the outer third.

EYEBROWS:

Neaten by tweezing out stray hairs from underneath. It is flattering to fill in spaces in the brow itself with a pencil or powder LIGHTER than your brow colour.

This still gives good definition and you will avoid a 'Groucho Marx' appearance ! Then brush the brows upwards and apply a little vaseline to keep them in place.

LIPSTICK:

Again, you will know the right shade immediately, it should 'light up your face'. Go with what you know suits you rather than the latest trends. A lipstick that suits you when you are not wearing any other makeup is a good bet.

Pinks with a touch of mauve can be for excellent for antiaging makeup. Matte or over-shiny or sparkly lipsticks can be unflattering. A finish between the two is often 'just right'.

To prevent lipstick 'bleeding', line your lips with a long lasting lipliner (there are plenty of these on the market). If you want longer lasting lipstick fill in the entire lip area with your liner before applying your lipstick.

Try and get a lipstick with sun protection. This will keep your lips young and plumper for longer.

If your lipstick looks too matte apply a little vaseline to the centre of your bottom lip.

EYESHADOW:

For antiaging makeup it is best to avoid bright and shiny colours. A subtle shade applied to the lid can be very flattering. Sweep it up a little at the outer corners.

SHIMMER AND HIGHLIGHTER:

These products can easily look overdone. If you want to use it, try applying it to tops of cheek bones and onto brow bones only.

Vaseline can be wonderful, patted on very minimally, for this purpose. It can be very effective patted in to fine lines around the eye area and then blotted.

Sometimes photographers dab a little vaseline under the eyes of mature models to give a more youthful look in photographs.

I remember reading that vaseline was often used on Marilyn Munroe's face before filming and photo shoots. A layer of vaseline would be applied and then blotted, then makeup put on. The result was a wonderful dewy look; a simple, but very effective antiaging makeup technique.

Makeup is a very individual thing. You know what is right for you. If it looks good, no matter what advice you may have heard, then go for it.

After all, it's meant to be fun!
